Archive for October, 2009

So I know I have some new readers who are interested in saving money on food and household items, so I thought I would try to post regularly about what the current deals are!

Here are the deals that are good anywhere (national sales):

Check out Target deals here and here.  I am not big on couponing at Target, but they sometimes have good “buy 5 get a $5 gift card” deals.  If you are a regular target shopper, remember that most now have a kiosk at the front (the registry one, I think) where you can print off target store coupons!  I would check out what they have to offer if you are in the store and have a few spare moments.

Rite Aid Deals here.  Remember that with the Rite Aid Single Check Rebate deals, you will have to wait a good 4-6 weeks to get your money back.  I have found that putting my SCR check on a Rite Aid gift card is the best way to regularly pay nothing out of pocket and get back money later.  This way I don’t have to forward a whole bunch of money up front and then wait to get it back.

Walgreens Deals here, here and here.  Remember that your total number of coupons (including Register Rewards) can not exceed your total number of items.  It can be tricky to make this work, so always remember to check whats in your cart before heading up front.  There are usually pencils, pens, candy, or toilet paper that are all under $.50 to use as fillers!  Also, remember that your RR will expire, usually within 10-14 days so make sure you don’t forget about them and also don’t try to roll your RR one right after the other (like use a halls RR to buy another halls) or you wont get another RR!

Thanks to Money Saving MomThe Krazy Coupon Lady, and Frugal Living NW  for all the deals!

Check out this fantastic post about Taking a Weekly Planning & Prayer Retreat.  It is from Passionate Homemaking, a great blog that I regularly read!

Although I don’t have children keeping me super busy in my home, I feel that it is important for me to evaluate my priorities on a regular basis even at this season in my life.  It is just too easy to become consumed in the tasks before us each day instead of becoming consumed in the Lord.

This post brought to mind some scriptures from the Gospel of Luke

38Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.

 39She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.

 40But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.”

 41But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things;

 42but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

~Luke 10:38-42

Are you spending time at the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ, or are you too busy and anxious about life?  I encourage you to do as Mary and “chose the good part”!

A Wife of Noble Character

A Wife of Noble Character:

 10  A wife of noble character who can find?
       She is worth far more than rubies.

 11 Her husband has full confidence in her
       and lacks nothing of value.

 12 She brings him good, not harm,
       all the days of her life.

 13 She selects wool and flax
       and works with eager hands.

 14 She is like the merchant ships,
       bringing her food from afar.

 15 She gets up while it is still dark;
       she provides food for her family
       and portions for her servant girls.

 16 She considers a field and buys it;
       out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

 17 She sets about her work vigorously;
       her arms are strong for her tasks.

 18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
       and her lamp does not go out at night.

 19 In her hand she holds the distaff
       and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

 20 She opens her arms to the poor
       and extends her hands to the needy.

 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
       for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

 22 She makes coverings for her bed;
       she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
       where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

 24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
       and supplies the merchants with sashes.

 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
       she can laugh at the days to come.

 26 She speaks with wisdom,
       and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

 27 She watches over the affairs of her household
       and does not eat the bread of idleness.

 28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
       her husband also, and he praises her:

 29 “Many women do noble things,
       but you surpass them all.”

 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
       but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

 31 Give her the reward she has earned,
       and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

~Proverbs 31:10-31

My Prayers

I was talking with a friend today about some of the things that I have been praying about lately.  I have found myself praying more often than I used to and often catch myself in the morning just talking to the Lord as I sit in traffic.

Awhile back, I listened to an audiobook called “The Power of a Praying Wife”, I remember hearing the author describe how her prayers for God to change her husband were answered instead by a change in her.  Well, that has happened (in a way) to me.

A few months back I dealt with the fact that my husband simply wasn’t going to be ready to start a family when we had “planned” on starting.  I was pretty heartbroken, I won’t lie about that.  I did realize that pushing him into getting pregnant wasn’t going to create a healthy relationship for anyone, so I (eventually) backed off.  I stopped my CONSTANT comments about how much I wanted to get pregnant and started praying that God would make Mark want a baby….

That was late August….here we are and it is late October and am I still praying that same prayer?

No

I realized a few weeks back that I no longer pray that God give me what I want…instead I find myself praying that God will give me what I NEED.  What do I need?  Well here are a few of the things that I am praying for…

1.  A heart that is pleasing to God….my prayers have opened time and time again with the plea that God would search my heart and cleanse it from all the sin within it.  I have prayed and prayed that God would use me and form me into a person that He will use for His divine purposes

2.  A husband who seeks the Lord above all else.  If anyone reading this is in one of my bible studies, you know that I have made this request time and time again.  I not only WANT a husband who strives to be a spiritual leader in my home and over me, but I NEED a husband who does those things.

3.  The strength and wisdom to become a better wife.  Each time I pray, I ask the Lord to make me into a woman who brings honor to my husband and who serves him and our home in a way that is pleasing to God.

Well, that is not all that I pray for, but those are some of my constant pleas.  Has anything changed since I started praying these things?  Well, actually, yes!

I am so happy to say that Mark has been faithful to keep his promise to me to give me time each night before bed when we read the Word together.  He choose 1 Samuel to begin with and we are about halfway through.  I have really enjoyed reading with him and he seems to be enjoying it as well.  I am still praying that the Lord will contine to draw Mark closer and closer to Him.  But, I have given it to the Lord and have made the conscious decision not to attempt to convince him to do anything that he doesn’t want to do.

While I cannot attest to becoming a better wife (you would have to ask Mark about that one 🙂 ) I can say that things are changing in my heart.  I feel the love and wisdom and guidance of my Heavenly Father surrounding me constantly.  I find myself reciting scriptures throughout the day.  I find myself checking my attitude over and over again and realigning myself with the word of God.  I am happier….I am not only more content with what I have, but find myself overwhelmed with how blessed I am!

I praise God for giving me the hope that is found only in Jesus Christ!

Our God is truly good!

FREE CRACKERS!

I ran out to Safeway late Sunday night to pick up some Nabisco crackers on sale that work with a great Nabisco rebate I heard about!  Here is my loot:

October 27 006

In order to maximize the use of doublers, I did two transactions…

Transaction 1: $4.26 OOP

  • 3 boxes Wheat Thins Flatbreads: $1.47 ea. – (3) $1/1 cpns – (3) $.47/1 dbls = FREE
  • 2 boxes Wheat Thins: $1.47 ea – $1/2 cpn – $.50/1 dbl = 1.44
  • 3ish pounds apples: $2.82

Transaction #2: $1.44 OOP

  • 3 boxes Wheat Thins Flatbreads: $1.47 ea. – (3) $1/1 cpns – (3) $.47/1 dbls = FREE
  • 2 boxes Wheat Thins: $1.47 ea – $1/2 cpn – $.50/1 dbl = 1.44

So my total OOP for all of this was $5.70 and I used bottle returns and some of my remaining safeway gift card balance to pay for it, so I didn’t even have to dip into my grocery money to stock back up on crackers!

As far as the Nabisco rebate goes, I spent $2.88 on ten boxes of Nabisco crackers so I will recieve a $10 rebate in the mail.  So after my rebate, I made a profit of $7.12 !! I really like getting FREE food, but I LOVE getting PAID TO TAKE IT!

Walgreens Moneymakers!

Last saturday I made a quick trip out to Walgreens (at 9:40 PM) to catch a great deal that I didn’t want to miss!  I did two transactions, each exactly the same.  They were super simple and BIG money makers!  Yay!!

October 27 008

  • One bag Halls Refresh Throat Drops: $1 – $1/1 cpn = FREE + $1 RR
  • One box Zantac: $9 – $5/1 cpn = $4 + $9 RR

Total OOP(per transaction): $4, with $10 in Register Rewards in hand

So after two transactions, I walked away with two bags of throat drops and two boxes of zantac for FREE and a profit of $12!  We are getting low on toilet paper, so if I don’t find another deal for some, I will use some of my register rewards for FREE TP!

WLC…on hold….

So yesterday, Monday, was supposed to be my weigh-in for week 8….and I did weigh-in….what i didn’t do was lose any weight….I have been back and forth for three weeks now and instead of feeling like a dieting failure, I have decided to take a week or two “break” from my weigh-in routine.  I am frustrated with myself for not making it to my first mini-goal by my birthday (sorry, but there is just no way to lose 8.8 pounds by Nov 16th!), but I am still in need of some new (smaller!) clothes, so hopefully I will get a chance to go shopping!  Coincidentally, meeting my first mini-goal (to lose 22 pounds) would also mean meeting one of my 2009 New Year’s Resolutions.  SO, I am still hoping to make it by then (a much more realistic goal)….

I realized this week that I have been attempting to lose weight for just over a year….I am very proud of the weight that I have lost (right around 50 pounds), but I am starting to get to the point where it is REALLY hard to lose weight.  I am certainly NOT making excuses…I am just saying that I feel like taking a break from the scale for a week or two, so that is exactly what I am going to do….

I will start back with my weekly weigh-in routine in a week or so and will take it from there!
