So today is a busy busy day!

I work this morning from 9-1, then I need to get EVERYTHING ready to go for our trip tomorrow!  I need to stop at the library to get a book on CD for the long drive, Costco to get our city passes, the grocery store to pick up some last minute food for our trip, Sports authority to find some shoes (my ones from llbean don’t quite fit right and there wasn’t time to return them 😦 , and then to the gas station to fill up the tank!

When I get hope I need to clean out the car, clean up my office (I was making cards and have quite an assortment of items to be put away), and clean up the bedroom (plus do a few loads of laundry).

I have quite a few items that are in the wash that need to be packed….and lots of little things (like the camera charger) that need to be gathered up as well.

Mark should be home by 6 and then we will eat a quick dinner, finish any additional packing, load up the car, and (hopefully) be in bed by 9 or 9:30…this will be a challenge for my night owl husband, but since we need to be up at 4 AM, we are just going to have to make it happen!

I am getting even more excited for the trip and I know mark is as well!  I can’t wait to see my cousin and her husband while we are down there and hopefully we will get to see my aunt, uncle, and cousins as well!

I wish that it was not so hot the past few days so that I could have finished packing earlier, but I am VERY THANKFUL for the significantly cooler weather last night and this morning (early this morning, I actually covered up with a sheet!)…it is supposed to stay in the low 90’s today so I should be much more productive!

I can’t say how often I will post while away….I will try to make an update every few days with some pictures, but we will just have to see how busy we are!

Here is the final verse for July….

Verse of the Day:

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 1: 12-13

Finally!  This morning around 5 AM the temperature dropped enough that I was able to sleep for a full two hours without waking up covered in sweat!  I am so thankful for the cool mornings!  I decided to take advantage of the temporary “cool” temperatures in the mid-70’s and so I did a quick “cleaning” of the main floor of the house (kitchen, dining room, living room)….although the kitchen still needs to be cleaned more and all the floors need to be vacuumed and/or mopped, it felt good to get something done….it was a nice change from sitting in one place for hours at a time.  I am keeping this post short because I want to try to finish cleaning the main floor before it starts to warm up between 9 and 10!  The good news is that they are predicting that the temp stay below 100 today!  YAY!!!

Yesterday was EXTREMELY hot (my car registered 111 after driving around for 15 min. or so), but the high in Portland was technically 105 or 106 (not enough to break the record of 107).  I did get a good deal of packing finished and so today I need to finish packing all of our food and toiletries….I also need to get to Old Navy to pick up some plain tees for Mark to wear (he is a polo guy, but they are so thick that I think he will be hot in them) and some flip flops for pool time…I also need to go to Dollar store to get some plates, bowls, etc.  that we can use for all our hotel meals….I am meeting a friend for lunch (maybe Cheesecake Factory, where they have 1/2 price cheesecake in celebration of National Cheesecake Day)…and I need to return some items to a few stores in the mall…so basically it will be a BUSY day, but at least a lot of what I need to do will be out of the house and in air conditioned places!

My poor husband had to pack his own lunch yesterday, and I must say that he looked quite distraught over the whole experience!  So I need to pack him up something yummy today!  All of our bread is in the freezer and I don’t want to take a whole loaf out just for one sandwich and then leave for Disney, so I think he is gonna get a wrap….he is pretty easy to please, so I think that will be fine with him!

Speaking of lunches….here is what we are planning to have for our Disney trip….

Breakfasts: Hotel!  We will be taking advantage of the free continental breakfasts at our hotels (and also snagging some yummy fruit for our snacks so we don’t have to buy lots!)

Lunches: 2-3 days we will eat in the park, but for the most part we (or “I”) plan to pack our lunches and eat out by the car each day….we will be having turkey or ham and cheese sandwiches, Chips, Fruit (probably Banana since they wont be good for carrying in the back pack all day), and something sweet (like some yummy cookies I got on sale last week)

Snacks: I have an assortment of “backpack friendly” snacks…including fruit and nut mix, dried fruit, crackers, string cheese, cashews, apples, and grapes (on sale at $.88/pound at albertsons!)

Dinners: We will be eating about half of our dinners in the hotel and half out…..for our hotel meals, we will be eating Madras Lentils and Rice, Black Beans and Rice, and Macaroni and Cheese and Chili….not the most balanced meals, but at less than a dollar or two a meal, it is the best option!

We are both starting to get really excited for our trip….we are looking forward to some much needed time as “just the two of us”….and Mark is really looking forward to, as he so elegantly put it, “not working for 7 days, but getting paid as if I was working”…..basically, this trip is a big strain on us financially, but we need it…no one can quite understand just how much we need it!

Well….this post ended up kind of scatterbrained….but oh well….I feel somewhat scatterbrained!

In case I don’t post later today, here is some food for thought….

Verse of the Day:

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

~Matthew 5:14-16

Remember that game you played as a kid where you were trying to find something and as you walked around the room someone told you if you were getting warmer or colder?  Well….I am playing that game….only it is just me playing….and somehow no matter where I walk to in my house I just keep getting warmer, but I never find anything…so instead of starting a new round “cold” and seeking the “hot spot” I just keep getting warmer and warmer with no end in sight…..

Yes…..the weatherman was correct this morning…he said it might get up to 105 and he wasn’t lying…..it is currently 105 and “feels like 107″….it is a scorcher indeed…

I have found little relief from the heat this afternoon….I spent awhile laying barely clothed in front of the fan, but after falling asleep for a quick nap, I woke up drenched in sweat……on the up side I did find a good use for the starbucks ice cream I got at walgreens for $.39 per pint!  I poured half of a starbucks coffee drink (the expensive kind in the glass jar…we still have some from when I was a costco addict….what can I say, I had a problem…but I am proud to say I am recovering 🙂 ) and half of a light chocolate smoothie drink in the blender and put two scoops of Java Chip Ice Cream in and blended it up….it was like my own little frappuccino….only way cheaper!  It cooled me off and it also was a nice pick-me-up after waking up tired and sweaty…..Mark can confirm that I am quite the grump when I wake up from a nap…..

I am planning to meet Mark at costco in a few minutes….which is good because it will be cooler there than here, but is bad because it means I will need to put some more clothes on and the thought of that makes me feel claustrophobic…..I need to pick up some lunch meat and cheese(depending on price) for our trip and it seems there are no good deals at any grocery stores or even grocery outlet on these items so costco will be the way to go I suppose…

Then Mark and I have decided to try out the pool at our gym (I am sure many others will be as well) and cool off before heading back home to do some packing….

Sorry for a post full of complaints….sitting is the only thing that doesn’t exhaust me and I don’t know how many more times I can check the weather (and no, there is no relief in sight for the next day or two)…

I don’t want to end as a debbie downer….so what am I thankful for?  Well, I am thankful for a car that has AC (many people don’t have this)…I am thankful for coupons and the very cheap starbucks ice cream that made my afternoon much sweeter….I am VERY VERY thankful for a husband that is willing to leave work a little early to save me the effort of making another trip out today….I am thankful for a nice long vacation I will be taking in just a few short days (and VERY THANKFUL for the two years that I will have spent happily married to the love of my life)…..and I am thankful for a house (as warm as it is) that allows me to escape from the blistering sun that so many are stuck under today…..

Today is hot and the heat is miserable, but LIFE IS GOOD!

Staying Cool….

Well, today was supposed to be my day for getting the house back under control (I was pretty useless around the house during the week of VBS) and packing for our Disney Trip, but apparently we are expecting temps around 105 degrees!  Now I am fairly new to Oregon, but I think that is a bit unusual…..what is even more unusual is that it is apparently going to stay above 100 until Friday when it should “drop down to the 90’s”….

Now, as a girl from back East, I can handle excessive heat….but most everyone has an air conditioner….many people here don’t….us included…..so our townhouse is like one big oven and we are already sweating while laying in bed, barely clothed, and with two fans blowing directly on us!  Even the poor cats are fairly delirious and just lay with out moving on the vinyl flooring, barely opening their eyes or moving a muscle when we walk buy or tempt them with treats!

Mary, my Mother in law, is going to buy a portable AC unit today since the heat is so hard on her…..I am tempted to do the same with temps as high as they are, but Mark and I just can’t justify the expense of a few hundred dollars (plus a big spike in the energy bill) for a week or so of super hot days….so it looks like I will be spending some of the day laying in front of the fan (and packing in short intervals)….and for the rest of the day, here are my ideas to cool off….

  • Head to 24 hr. fitness and jump in the pool (It might be super crowded….so I might have to scratch that plan and just sit on the recumbent bike for awhile with a book and cool off in the AC)
  • Spend some time at Borders
  • Take Monty (the poor dog is beside himself) to Petsmart to walk around for awhile
  • Head to Old Navy to buy some new shirts for Mark (already planning to buy the shirts, but today seems as good a day as any to go over there)
  • Head to the library to pick out a audio book for the drive down to CA
  • Treat myself to a Jamba Juice Smoothie with this BOGO coupon (Thanks Frugal Living NW!)
  • Take lunch over to Marks work and have an “indoor picnic” in the nice air conditioned office!

Well…..those are some of the things I might do to stay cool….if you think of any good ones let me know…..it is gonna be a hot one and many more to come!  At least tomorrow I work and it is air conditioned there….

I will be back later to post more…

Verse of the Day:

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music

~Psalm 98:4
